Body Piercing healing instructions

Proper care of your new piercing is essential for healing. Since it is an open wound, a fresh piercing can easily develop an infection. Be sure to keep dirty fingers away from your new piercing. Avoid excessive tugging and pulling, because germs can be passed though an open wound, do not allow anyone elses bodily fluids to come into contact with your new piercing. Do not remove the jewelry from your piercing until it is fully healed. If you take the jewelry out, the hole may close immediately.

Washing:

Wash twice a day with a recommended cleanser.

1. Wash your hands with soap and water.

2. Soak piercing in a saltwater solution. Saltwater should be applied by adding a pinch of sea salt to a glass of warm water and cupping the glass against the piercing or by gargling. Allow the piercing to soak at least a couple of minutes. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water.

3. Lather well with soap.

4. Work soap through the piercing.

5. Work the jewelry back and forth with fresh water to remove any traces of soap. Be sure to rinse thoroughly.

Between washings:

*Antiseptics such as pierced ear solution or Bactine can be used occasionally (no more than once or twice a day). Antiseptics should be applied with a clean cotton swab and only on the outside of the piercing.

Things that will help you heal your new piercing:

" Keep dirty fingers away from your new piercing. Wash your hands before touching it. Use a clean paper towel to dry your washed piercing instead of a bath towel. Cotton towels can harbor bacteria.

" Your overall health will affect the healing process. BE sure to eat a balanced diet, avoid as much stress as possible and get enough rest.

" Taking a supplement of zinc and/or grapefruit extract with a meal or in a multi-vitamin may help promote healing.

" Ibuprophen (Motrin, Advil) Naproxen Sodium (Aleve) or Acetaminophen (Tylenol) will work great to relieve some of the swelling and reduce some of the soreness. Do not take Asprin.

" Choose one type of cleanser (soap) and stick with it if it is working well fro you. If you are experiencing itching, excessive redness or constant irritation, you may be having an allergic reaction to the cleanser. If this occurs, discontinue use of that product and switch to another cleanser.

" Keep long hair, cosmetics and if it is an ear piercing keep dirty telephones away from your new piercing.

" Allow the piercing to breathe and stay dry. Dont keep it covered at all.

" For genital piercings, any sexual activity that you have, should be protected until the piercing is fully healed. Even if you have been with your partner for a long time, their body fluids and secretions can cause infection.

Things that will harm your piercing:

" Do not take aspirin as a pain reliever, it can thin your blood and make you bleed.

" Do not drink alcohol for the first 7-10 days after getting your new piercing. Alcohol can increase swelling and promote bleeding.

" Hot tubbing or swimming in chlorinated pools or fresh water lakes and rivers should be avoided until the piercing is healed. Chlorine is very irritating to a new wound and fresh water can contain harmful bacteria.

" The use of recreational drugs will slow down your healing process.
